The one story firehouse includes a modern command center and emergency communications room; oversized garage doors to accommodate today's larger vehicles; and a circular driveway to greatly reduce traffic hazards when the fire trucks quickly leave their buildings in response to emergency calls. Other features of the new design are updated kitchens and living quarters.
Project Description: This new fire station for Engine Co. 88 replaced a station at 60th Street and St. Louis Avenue built in 1927, and is located near Midway Airport at 59th Street between Central Park and Lawndale Avenues.
Based on a standardized prototype design incorporating the most up-to-date firefighting technology, the new station is one story tall and approximately 14,300 square feet in size.
