As the museum collection grew over time, the shortage of storage space could no longer be resolved by renovating the light wells created in the original design. Facing key issues such as historical landmark status, city fire code, and city lakefront ordinances, it was decided by the Field Museum that a new, two-level, 200,000 sq. ft. Collections Resource Center is built underground.
In the Collections Resource Center project the soil retention system was a slurry wall that was being retained with cross-lot bracing that itself was supported with piles.
